MINNEAPOLIS, MN – On Thursday, October 17th, COPAL MN will proudly welcome U.S. Representative Jesús G. “Chuy” García from Illinois to speak at its annual Dignity and Democracy Gala at Quincy Hall in Minneapolis. Congressman García’s remarks will help COPAL celebrate six years as a Latine-led member-based organization working to improve the lives of Minnesota’s Latine communities.

Rep. García is a progressive voice fighting for his working-class neighbors, many of whom are immigrants like him. He is a coalition builder committed to empowering youth and expanding access to quality education, affordable housing, and economic opportunity.

Prior to his role in Congress, Rep. García was a member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. As Commissioner, he opposed housing discrimination against frontline communities, raised the minimum wage, and mandated that County employees have access to paid sick leave. He also passed an ordinance ending Cook County’s cooperation with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE). The measure was the first of its kind in the nation and set an example followed by more than 250 localities.

At the Gala, Rep. García will be joined by COPAL’s keynote speaker and former Minnesota State Senator, Patricia Torres Ray, the first Latina elected to the Minnesota Senate. The event will also include a food menu crafted by CRAVE Catering, live music from Los Jornaleros del Norte, dancing and community connection. COPAL invites family, friends, community partners and supporters to join them for the celebration.
